Calm Down or Else

The New York Times today published an article about how public schools are routinely and illegally restraining children with behavior problems.

I hope this works without needing registration to view: Calm Down or Else by Benedict Carey.

It all seems quite familiar.

The article referred to schools with a "zero tolerance" policy for behavior as being the worst. That's really what was going on with Saul in his first school. The entire school prides itself on the "attention" the children show in class and the "Henderson way" of teaching and learning.

Throw a kid in there who's not compliant and the adults lose their minds.

That poor kid locked in a closet. Ugh.

Huh. It's illegal up here to touch a kid - teachers are to the point they are afraid to hug the kids in their class.

I watched a Dateline (or something like that) about a school that suited kids up in shock vests. It scared the shit out of me but the kids that were going to this school were there because they were violent and had hurt family members etc. Still scared me though.
